With high IGP-M, the market defends freedom to negotiate the increase of rent




Historically used as a reference for rent readjustments, the IGP-M recorded an increase of 31.57% in the index accumulated in the last 12 months. The Chamber of Deputies may vote in the next plenary sessions a bill (PL) by Deputy Vinicius Carvalho (Republicanos-SP), which sets the IPCA, considered the country’s official inflation, as a revision for residential and commercial lease contracts. Under the argument of protecting tenants, the bill changes the Tenancy Law, which for 30 years has left both parties free to negotiate. The case took shape with the bill’s presentation on Monday, which goes beyond blocking any readjustment of rent until December 31, 2022.
